Holt Proctor McBriarty Insurance Agency recently celebrated the 40th year anniversary of risk control specialist, Edwina Burke, at its office in Milford. Edwina has seen four decades of changes within the insurance industry from hand-written applications to a paperless office. Though many things have changed within the agency, one thing that has remained consistent is Edwina’s dedication to the agency’s clients and commitment to her work.
During the celebration, Edwina took the time to share with her fellow co-workers, employers, company staff, family and friends a summary of her journey through the last 40 years. Her speech was as follows:
It has been a long journey. In June of 1972 I moved up from Boston Massachusetts to Milford New Hampshire. In Boston I worked for Liberty Mutual in their work comp statistical department. Every day I would drive my car to Nashua, park at the Grey Hound bus station and take the bus into Boston. It was a very long day for me because I didn't get home until 7:30 every night. So I was hoping I could find employment closer to home.
Then one day my sister-in-law called and said, “Wina, there is an ad in the Milford Cabinet for the Harland H. Holt Agency for an experienced automobile rater.” I said to her, “I don’t know anything about rating automobile insurance, but I do like working with figures.”
Her suggestion was to apply for the job, and maybe they would train me. So I applied for the job and fortunately I was hired by Mel Reever. I owe Mel a lot. This was back to 1972, so Mel and I go back a long way.
I remember the first day I came to work. I sat at a desk with an adding machine and a small table with a manual type writer. I got a little nervous when I saw the type writer. I took a college prep class in high school and I only had one class in typing on a keyboard. To top it all off, one of my first assignments was to type invoices. In those days, policies and endorsements were manually rated, typed and billed by the agency. So we have come a long way with computers and automation.
Well my journey has taken me from Harland H. Holt to The Holt Agency to Holt Proctor McBriarty Insurance Agency. I have grown a lot along with these agencies, thanks to Mel Reever, Jerry Guilbert and Lyle Fulkerson. It is hard to recognize everyone by name, but I would like to thank my co-workers and my ex-coworkers for their friendship and support over the years. Many thanks to them, my family, friends, insurance company personnel who have all come here tonight to help celebrate this occasion. Thank you and God bless you all.
Thank you Edwina - for all that you have given to the agency and its clients.
