NH Health Insurance Options for the Self-Employed

Written by April Weismann | Oct 3, 2019 3:37:23 PM

If you are self-employed, you may be limited in what is available to you for health insurance plans.  Here is a quick overview of your NH health insurance options if you are self-employed.

Can I have a NH group health insurance plan if I am self-employed?

Like most things in insurance, the answer is maybe.  Your business could qualify for a group medical plan in New Hampshire if you have at least one full-time employee who is not your spouse.  If you don't have any employees beyond you and/or your spouse, you would need to obtain an individual or family insurance policy.

When Can I Buy a NH Group Insurance Plan?

If you have at least one full-time employee, you can obtain a group health insurance policy at any time, pending underwriting review.

What if I am self-employed and don't have any employees?

If you are self-employed without employees, you are limited to the individual health insurance market; however, enrollment may be limited to the open enrollment window of November 1st - December 15th.  At this time, the only exception to this enrollment period is if you have qualifying life event such as:

  • Loss of health coverage due to employment
  • Change in the household such as getting married or divorced
  • Move out-of-state

What if I am a subcontractor, can I get NH health insurance?

Again, assuming you don't have any full-time employees, you may apply for individual health insurance during open enrollment unless a qualifying event occurs.

What if my business has a group health insurance plan, but I need to let all employees go?

You can only qualify for group health insurance if you have employees on the payroll.  If not, your health insurance plan will be non-rewed.
