ATV Insurance in New Hampshire

What is ATV Insurance?

Four-wheelers and other all-terrain vehicles are both fun and useful, but operating one does come with risk. ATV insurance policies don’t prevent New Hampshire riders from being in accidents, but they can shield those who own off-road vehicles from some of the perils they face.

ATV insurance policies are specialized personal insurance policies that have been uniquely crafted to meet an ATV owners’ risk mitigation needs. Policies are generally written as package policies, which means they typically include multiple coverages within their projections.

Who in New Hampshire Should Have ATV Coverage?

Most people who own four-wheelers or other ATVs in New Hampshire and elsewhere should have insurance for their off-road vehicles. Not only is replacing a lost or damaged ATV expensive, but liability lawsuits arising from accidents can be downright devastating. Without coverage, many owners would struggle to recover from a major incident.

What Coverages Do ATV Policies Offer?

ATV owners frequently have a litany of standard and available coverages they can choose from when purchasing an ATV policy. Some of the more notable protections that a policy might make available are:

  • Medical Payments, which may cover injuries to people on an ATV

  • Bodily Injury Liability Coverage, which may cover injuries to other people

  • Collision and Comprehensive Coverage, which may cover damage to an ATV

  • Property Damage Liability Coverage, which may cover damage to other property

  • Accessories Coverage, which may cover aftermarket parts and safety gear

  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage, which may cover accidents caused by improperly insured drivers

An insurance agent who has detailed knowledge of ATV policies can fully explain these and the other coverages available, and can help owners choose the coverages that make sense for their situation.

Doesn't my NH home or auto insurance cover my ATV?

Though coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of the individual policy, many NH homeowner's policies will only extend liability coverage if not subject to motor vehicle registration and owned by an insured and on an insured location (your property).  As many people like to take their ATVs onto public trails or off their own land, this would leave a huge gap in coverage should someone get hurt.  Most NH home policies also specifically exclude all motorized land conveyance vehicles from property coverage so if your ATV crashed and was damaged, there would most likely not be any coverage from the home policy to repair it.

The standard auto policy would not cover the liability or property damage of an owned ATV as it does not meet the definition of a private passenger auto and would need to be specifically listed on the policy itself.

Again, not all insurance policies are the same so it is encouraged that you speak with your insurance professional to ensure your coverage needs are met, but the best way to insure an ATV is to get ATV insurance.

Can Owners Drop Coverage When Storing ATVs for Winter?

While owners can cancel a policy when putting their ATV into storage to save money, this often isn’t the wisest strategy. Canceling a policy outright can leave an ATV unprotected if it’s damaged while in storage, and the action may create a coverage gap that could lead to higher premiums in the future.

Instead of canceling a policy, owners can ask an agent for assistance in adjusting coverages. With an agent’s help, owners can keep their ATV properly covered during winter while also eliminating protections that aren’t necessary while the vehicle is in storage. This strategy frequently helps reduce premiums without sacrificing important protections or creating gaps.  The only catch is to remember to call your agent once the ATV is back in use.

How Much Do ATV Policies Cost?

Insurance companies look at many factors when setting premiums for ATV policies, so rates do vary. Some of the items that might influence the cost of a policy include the:

  • Year, make and model of an ATV

  • Location where an ATV is stored

  • Aftermarket parts installed on an ATV (if any)

  • Past claims history of the policyholder

  • Coverages and limits selected

Even with the differences in policies’ premiums, coverage is normally quite affordable. Premiums typically cost only a little, and they’re almost certainly less than how much recovering from an accident or other incident could cost.
